100% Design Shanghai and International Home Décor & Design 2009 closes with a 60%  growth this year; Visitors Up by 17% to 10,000 Trade Visitors

Organized by Reed Exhibitions, the second editions of 100% Design Shanghai and International Home Décor & Design attracted 9,692 visitors, an increase of nearly 17% from its debut in 2008. The two exhibitions received overwhelming response from exhibitors this year, with over 100 leading international brands from 16 countries displaying their latest interior products and home decorations on the 6,000sqm gross space, an increase of about 60% from 2008.

“Following the success of last year’s show, we are very happy to see that 100% Design Shanghai and International Home Décor & Design 2009 has outdone itself yet again in terms of scale and number of visitors.  This means that the event is getting more attention and support from the Chinese design industry”, said Preecha S. Chen, President of Reed Exhibitions Greater China. “Reed Exhibitions will continue to support this platform where inspiration, originality and knowledge exchange can thrive.  This way, we can consistently deliver a feast of interior design innovation to the visitors.”

The visitor breakdown included 919 VIPs (which means specifically targeted individuals in the design industry), an increase of 10.6% from 2008; 159 specially invited guests and 430 members of the press also attended the three-day event at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre from 15 to 17 October 2009.

The creative installation “Points of Light” made with CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements was a particular hit among visitors. Filing the entrance with a matrix of crystals, the custom installation by Tobias Wong and Aric Chen interpreted the specific qualities of the products of 100% Design Shanghai’s main sponsor, CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements. Complementing the installation was the showcase of selected works jointly created by CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements and the American Rhode Island School of Design; and the 100% CRYSTALLIZED pop-up shop which attracted visitors with 5 specially designed souvenirs made from crystals. Displaying for the first time in Asia were also a series of commercial works created by noted designers, as well as local and international architects using CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements.

Also stealing attention at the entrance was STEP 1, a project sponsored by Chinese furniture manufacturer Airises. Five Chinese architects were invited to design experimental furniture, including the table Not Exactly Round by Limited Design, a seating series Ta by Scenic Architecture Office, the Ease Series chairs by sciSKEW Collaborative, a sculptural seat, Artificial Atmosphere by Studio Pei-Zhu and Meandering Chair by Amateur Architecture Studio.

Winners of the “DESIGNED IN CHINA: the Rado Young Design Prize” were also unveiled at the exhibition. Sponsored by the renowned Swiss watchmaker Rado, two grand prizes were awarded to the designers of “DIY Bench” and “Solarium Clock”. The respective recipients, Shen Qian Qian, Baoyi Zhang and Lingling Hu won out of 250 entries received from designers all over China. These pieces boasted a brand-new interpretation of Chinese design elements as well as an internationalized design style. “I am delighted and honoured to win this award which was judged by a very respectable panel of judges,” said Shen Qian Qian. “The award not only gave me an opportunity to showcase my work, it also gave me the opportunity to meet and interact with many other product designers.” Besides these two grand prizes, six other finalists also displayed their winning pieces at the exhibition.

Exhibitors also gave their thumbs up for the response received at the exhibitions.  Benjamin Bilteryst, Managing Director Asia Pacific of Christofle, which exhibited for the first time in IHDD this year, said “Christofle was very glad to be part of IHDD in 2009 to promote design in China.  The show proved to be a good and effective platform for us.  Besides a successful participation, Christofle also sponsored the VIP dinner which also adds value to our presence at the show. We wish long life for IHDD in China.”

Also exhibiting for the first time was Poliform at 100% Design Shanghai.  “This is the first time Poliform is exhibiting in 100% Design Shanghai and we were really happy with our participation. Our booth was always busy and we have received many good enquiries. We planned to be back next year with a much bigger exhibit space. ”said Bo Teo, Managing Director of Spazio China, which carries the Italian brand.

A particularly exciting new segment introduced this year was 100% Futures, which looked to unearth new designers and new establishments. Exhibitors found their fresh design elements and innovative styles a hit among visitors. “100% Futures was full of surprises”, said Yi Weisheng, Design Director of Taiwan Afterrain Design Studio. “This was our first time to exhibit in Mainland China. We met a lot of people who showed great interest in our products and we also made contact with potential partners for the future. 100% Futures is a fabulous platform for us to develop our business. We are looking forward to an even better show next year.”

In yet another coup for the exhibition, several world famous designers were invited to speak at the Conference this year. Alan Chan, Tony Chi, Bertjan Pot delivered enlightening speeches that placed the spotlight firmly on innovation and sharing of their creative experiences. The conference concluded with Keynote address from the design duo of Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, who are known for their fluent and reserved design style, and innovation with materials and technology.

The state-of-the-art creative exhibits and engaging activities at the exhibitions won high praise from the broad spectrum of attendees. Hong Kong-based entrepreneur Alan Lo, who also serves as Chairman of Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design said, “This show was a great success. Many impressive furniture designs were showcased and I hope to see even more next year.” Qian Guozhang, Director of Interior Design in HASSELL said, “I was here last year too. Both this year’s show and last year’s were very impressive. It is a great showcase and opportunity for members of our industry to communicate.” Qu Lei, Senior Manager of Project Planning at Shanghai Konghui Property Development Co., Ltd also said, “Being at the show was thrilling. We found a lot of original design elements which you don’t see at similar industry events.”
