This way, they will also significantly improve networking opportunities for all participants. In what is a major coup for the event’s organizers, Reed Exhibitions, securing these high profile industry thought leaders is sure to enhance the presence of 100% Design Shanghai / IHDD 2011 in the local and international media.
Each panelist is an opinion leader carefully selected based not only on their industry expertise but also on the common passion they share with Reed Exhibitions: to deliver a high quality, innovative and inspirational event to the Chinese interior design and furniture trade. Reed is pleased to introduce this year’s panelists below:
Michael Young is one of the most successful and influential designers of his generation. For 20 years, he has been making waves in Europe and Asia with his avant-garde steel works and furniture collections. Often imitated but never equaled, Mr. Young was named Most Inspirational British Designer by the visionary Sir Terence Conran in 1997. Five years later, he was Guest of Honor at the Kortrijk Design Biennale - an exclusive honor previously bestowed on the likes of world famous product designer Philippe Starck and esteemed Italian architect Gio Ponti.
Alongside Mr. Young will be Filippo Gabbiani, Founder & Chief Architect of Kokaistudios. From an early age in his native Italy, Mr. Gabbiani was fascinated by art and design. This led him to study Architecture at Venice University, after which his passion for cultural diversity took him to posts at prestigious architecture firms across Europe and the US. It was in the year 2000 that he and co-founder Andrea Destefanis created Kokaistudios in Shanghai. Since then, Mr. Gabbiani has made Asia his permanent home. Today, he indulges his love of artistic glass design and promotes sustainable architecture to preserve Asia’s heritage sites.
Jeong Sim Choi, President of the Korea Craft & Design Foundation, is the Panel’s third member. Ms. Choi is a Professor at the Kaywon School of Art & Design Exhibition. With qualifications from South Korea and France, her most recent projects have included sitting on the Seoul Design Fair’s Planning Committee and directing the production of the Design Market Place themed exhibition.
Yan Mi, the other female panelist, is the Editorial Director of ELLE Decoration China. Since 2000, she has worked for fashion media outlets in Beijing and Paris. In 2004, it was her skill and tenacity that helped spearhead the launch of ELLE Decoration China, a design and architecture magazine. The following year, Ms. Yan was the main judge of the ELLE Decoration International Design Awards (EDIDA) China, a competition to bring Chinese creatives to the foreground of international design.
The name “Mi Qiu” is associated with numerous international awards and synonymous with the powerful integration of art and technology, aka ArTech. Mr. Mi is known as the “first Chinese artist to fully understand Western modernism” and will bring this expertise to bear as the fifth member of the Design Advisory Panel. Over two decades, he was part of the regeneration plans for some of China’s oldest cities. In 1996, he set up Mi Qiu Modern Art Studio in Shanghai. His current works - Declaration of Holy Land (on show at Lugu Lake) and Thousands in One World (on show in Tongli) – portray a re-thinking of the power of urban energy. They also symbolize the enduring concept of ArTech.
As Executive Publisher of Surface China; Operations Director and Editorial Committee Member of the Art and Design Group; Deputy Secretary of the China Periodical Association and member of the VDZ (Verband Deutscher Zeitschriftenverleger) – the Association of German Magazine Publishers, Darcy Hu, the sixth panelist, wears many professional hats. With 10 years’ experience in creative media, he uses the extensive insight gleaned during his world travels to enhance communication and co-operation between China and the international creative industry through design, art, music, technology and media. Founder of Design magazine, Mr. Hu also introduced Surface China and Q magazines to the Chinese market. In 2010, he was an advisor for the British International Young Interactive Entrepreneur Award, as well as for 100% Design Shanghai’s DESIGNED IN CHINA Competition.
Lyndon Neri, holder of Architecture degrees from Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley, is a founding partner of Neri & Hu Design; a multidisciplinary international architectural practice.
